Minister Tasks Mbale to Tap into Mt. Elgon Tourism Potential

The state minister for Environment, Mary Goretti Kitutu has asked authorities in Mbale Municipality to tap into the mount Elgon tourism potential to increase on their revenue base.

She said Bugisu is downplaying the beauty of the mountain yet it can attract many investors.

The minister said that people in Bugisu need to market the region through the Mountain, the weather, and the Kadodi cultural dance.

Kitutu who was speaking during the Mbale municipal council meeting on Thursday said that Mbale can be a regional, business and tourism city.

She said that Mbale can only develop when all the leaders unite and work as a team saying that the Bagisu have abandoned their area and instead developed other areas like Mukono.  She asked the Mbale Municipality mayor to write to the Civil Aviation Authority to request for an airfield so that planes can fly in visitors .

Mbale Municipality Mayor, Mutwalib Zandya said it is the responsibility of the leaders and the local people to stimulate the tourism of the town.

He said that Mbale has since been a business and a tourism hub and if tapped into well then more opportunities will come to benefit the people.

Umar Muzi, the Namatala ward male councilor said that through tourism the Municipality can generate more revenue. He cited tourism potential sites like the endowed rivers in the region, Kakungulu hill, Mutoto cultural Center among others.

Kasim Madagi, the Mbale Municipality Youth councilor said that the municipality should improve on the hygiene of the town so as to attract the tourists.
