Fisheries Protection Unit Demolishes Houses at Miyana Landing Site

The fisheries protection unit has demolished houses at Miyana Landing site.

The landing site is located on Miyana Island, Mazinga Sub County in Kalangala District.

They were demolished on Wednesday night displacing more than 160 people.

According to a source in the fisheries unit who preferred anonymity, they were tipped that several residents in the area are involved in illegal fishing activities.

The soldiers arrived at the landing site on Wednesday night, searched for illegal fishing gears and later demolished all temporary structures the fishermen live in.

“The soldiers came armed and ordered us out of all the houses and started demolishing one after the other. They later turned to our boats and started demolishing each of them and ordered us to vacate the island.” one of the residents only identified as Mukalazi .

Innocent Abaho, the Officer in- charge of the UPDF Marines conducting operations against illegal fishing says that fishermen have for long been dealing in the illegal fishing business.

Last year, soldiers under the unit directed by the Chief of Defense Forces David Muhoozi not to demolish any structures on landing sites.

The UPDF marines are also said to have beaten up fishermen at Kyeserwa landing site in Mazinga Sub County on Thursday.

One of the victims Wasswa Haruna fainted and is currently undergoing treatment at Dajje health center II.
