Rosebud leading in Spreading Ugandan flower Fragrance Worldwide

Based at Namulanda off Entebbe road in Wakiso district, Rosebud Ltd is the country’s largest exporter of roses, commanding around 40% of Uganda’s raised export market.
Elgon daily business desk caught up with the farm manager Mr. Ravi Kumar who told us their journey.

He explained that the green houses on the farm cover a total of 50 hectares producing and exporting over 15 million stems per month.
These stems, due to the favorable weather conditions experienced throughout the year, result in their all being of the same high standard.
Ravi noted that they solely specialize in the production of quality cut roses for export onto the world market.

The greenhouses are irrigated by a modern, automated water-pumping unit, which feeds their fully computerized hydroponics systems.
Talking about the varieties of flowers on the farm, Ravi named the following two categories of roses which are produced: Sweetheart Roses; Valentino (dark red), Viva (bright yellow), Chelsea (orange), Red Calypso (bright red), Meera (champagne), Akito (white), Blushing Akito (pink), Raspberry King (dark red), Jambo (bright red) and Intermediate Roses; Ace Pink (pink), Bella Rose (pink), Sunny Star (yellow), Furiosa (dark red), Tropical Amazone (orange), Banjo (pink), Labelle (peach), Sorraya (yellow), Athena (white).

Rosebud Limited, the largest exporter of Sweetheart cut, is a flagship company of Ruparelia Group of companies which is owned and managed by Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia.
He noted that the farm produces approximately 40% of total Ugandan flower exports of which they are in the process of expanding up to 65 hectares of green houses for the targeted export of 17 million stems per month in the near future.

He stressed how they are constantly building the capacity of staff in order to reduce damages caused to roses and minimize wastage and rejections and that they have improved their processes in propagation, growing, harvesting, grading, packaging and export of cut roses.
The weather is consistent for the whole year, which is ideal for production and the ability to maintain a very high quality product.
The farm exports 32 cm, 37 cm, and 52 cm length stems with head sizes between 2.8 cm to 3.2 cm for sweetheart roses and 3.5 cm to 4.5 cm head sizes for intermediate roses. We are capable of handling all types of bunching specifications concluded Ravi.
